Garmin, one of the market leaders in GPS watches for athletics and sports, even at the competitive level, recently launched the new Garmin Forerunner 965. In this article, we will examine in detail its main features, functionality, design, performance, and reliability with several field trials and stress tests.

Key Features

The Garmin Forerunner 965 is a GPS watch designed for athletes of all levels, from neophyte to professional. It has an improved battery compared to its predecessor, the Garmin Forerunner 945, allowing up to 22 hours of continuous use with GPS active and up to 23 days in smartwatch mode. In addition, it features a new 1.4-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels, which finally offers a ‘ great viewing experience in  any light condition for a Garmin professional model.

The Forerunner 965 also features an improved navigation system with multi-band Galileo and Glonass technology and traditional GPS, allowing for greater accuracy in position detection and data processing. In addition, the device has 32 GB of internal memory, which allows it to store more maps, GPS tracks, audio files, and apps than previous models.

The Garmin Forerunner 965 offers many advanced features, such as the ability to monitor blood oxygen (Vo2 Max) during exercise, a part that was not available in previous models. In addition, training sessions can be recorded in multisport mode, which allows different activities such as swimming, running, cycling and triathlon to be monitored in succession. The device also has a sleep monitoring function, which provides detailed information about the quality and quantity of sleep. It also has a cadence sensor to monitor pedalling frequency during cycling sessions. It also features pre-loaded mapping with   SATIQ™ for use in outdoor activities. Also present are all the profiles for predefined workouts that Garmin has long accustomed us to.

Design and construction

The Garmin Forerunner 965 features a sleek and modern design, available with a carbon fibre-reinforced case in two different colour options: black and white. The titanium bezel is also available in carbon grey DLC colour, and the interchangeable straps are made of soft, anti-allergic silicone in white, black, and green. The light weight and large size make this smartwatch suitable mainly for a male wrist, and the decidedly sporty look makes it unsuitable for formal occasions.

field test

I tested the Garmin Forerunner 965 during several sports activities, including running, cycling and swimming. In all activities, the watch was highly accurate in capturing data such as distance, speed, pace and GPS track, confirming itself on par with its predecessor, a reference in the field. The blood oxygen monitoring function was handy during the run, as it allowed me to monitor my physical condition in real time and adjust the intensity of my training accordingly. The built-in cadence sensor was handy during my cycling activity, allowing me to monitor my pace and maintain a consistent cadence during training.

During my field test, I found the Forerunner easy to use in all conditions thanks to its large, high-resolution AMOLED touch display and convenient physical buttons. The watch also comes with a wide range of intelligent features, such as call and message notifications, allowing me to stay connected even while working out. I also appreciated the sleep monitoring function, which provided valuable information about the quality of my night’s rest and helped me improve my sleep routine.

Finally, I particularly appreciated Garmin’s highly advanced algorithms capable of processing the vast amount of data collected during workouts to provide suggestions on recovery time, quality of the activity performed and personalized programs according to the goals set. Ultimately an actual professional coach is always on your wrist!

The Garmin Forerunner 965 is a GPS watch with advanced features, such as the ability to detect blood oxygen, and sleep quality cadence, making it a complete device for training and fitness monitoring. The sleek, modern design and carbon fibre-reinforced case makes it durable and lightweight. However, the price of €650 may limit its popularity among less experienced athletes or those looking for a cheaper GPS watch. Overall, the Garmin Forerunner 965 is an excellent choice for serious athletes looking for a high-quality GPS watch with numerous advanced features.
